Nail disorder treatments

8 October 2024

Nail disorders and abnormalities are common, with people of all ages and from all walks of life experiencing nail problems at some point or another. Knowing the symptoms of nail disorders and where to turn for help is therefore important. Luckily, you’re in exactly the right place if you are seeking treatment. Read on to discover your treatment options for the most common nail disorders…

Fungal nail infections

Fungal infections affect the health and condition of toenails and fingernails. During a fungal nail infection, your nail may become brittle or discoloured. It may also be thicker than usual.

While harmless, fungal nail infections can be uncomfortable and even painful at times. Treatment is often a long process, with visible results sometimes not able to be seen for several months. Whether treated topically through the application of antifungal creams or antifungal nail lacquer, orally via antifungal medications, or using cutting-edge laser therapy, your infection can be cured and healthy nail growth realised once again.

Ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail begins to grow into the skin. The consequences can be extremely painful, with swelling and infection likely if treatment is not sought.

There are several steps you can take at home to ease painful symptoms. Soaking the affected foot in warm water can have a particularly soothing effect. You should also keep the nails trim and avoid wearing tight fitting shoes. For a longer-term solution, we provide the surgical removal of ingrown nails.

Nail psoriasis

Psoriasis doesn’t just affect the condition of the skin. According to The Psoriasis Association, approximately 80% of people with psoriasis suffer from nail psoriasis. Symptoms are similar to fungal nail infection, which often means nail psoriasis is misdiagnosed.

We regularly treat discolouration, thickening, pitting and brittleness caused by nail psoriasis. Treatment options include topical corticosteroid creams or ointments that actively decrease inflammation, and phototherapy which uses ultraviolet light to improve the nail’s condition.

Bacterial nail infections

Bacterial nail infections (or paronychia) cause significant problems not necessarily for the nail but for the surrounding skin or nail folds. These infections are commonly caused by a strain called ‘staphylococcus aureus’, with the condition common in people who bite or pick their nails. In cases like these, oral or topical antibiotics may be prescribed as treatment.

Nail trauma

Treatment for nail trauma – including the trapping or crushing of the fingers – mostly relies on rest and protection. In most cases, the nail will heal naturally, although surgical intervention may be required.
