Nail disorder treatments

What is a nail disorder?

Nail disorders can manifest in various forms and can be caused by a number of factors.

Common nail disorders include:

  • Fungal Nail Infections: Fungal infections of the nails, known as onychomycosis, can cause discoloration, thickening, and brittleness of the nails.
  • Ingrown Nails: When the edge of a nail grows into the skin.  This can cause pain, swelling, and infection.
  • Nail Psoriasis: Psoriasis can affect the nails as well as skin, causing changes such as pitting, discoloration, and separation of the nail from the nail bed.
  • Paronychia: This is an infection of the skin around the nail, resulting in redness, swelling, and pain.
  • Beau's Lines: These are horizontal ridges or depressions in the nails that may indicate a previous illness or injury.
  • Onycholysis: This condition occurs when the nail separates from the nail bed, often due to trauma, psoriasis, or fungal infections.
  • Nail Trauma: Injuries to the nails, such as crushing or slamming a finger in a door, can cause nail damage or loss.
  • Brittle Nails: Nails that are brittle, weak, or easily breakable may be due to factors like aging, nutritional deficiencies, or excessive exposure to water and chemicals.

If you notice any persistent or concerning changes to your nails, it's important to consult with an appropriate medical expert such a dermatologist who can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options.

What are the treatments for nail disorders?

There are various treatments available for nail disorders, depending on the specific condition. We can advise you on the best approach following an examination of your condition.

Some common treatments for nail disorders are:

1. Fungal Nail Infection:
  - Antifungal medications: Oral antifungal medications or antifungal nail lacquer can help treat fungal nail infections.

2. Ingrown Toenails:
  - Soaking the affected foot in warm water.
  - Properly trimming the nails and avoiding tight-fitting shoes.
  - Surgical removal of the ingrown nail if necessary.

3. Nail Psoriasis:
  - Topical treatments: Corticosteroid creams or ointments can help reduce inflammation.
  - Phototherapy: Exposing the affected nails to ultraviolet light can also be beneficial.

4. Bacterial Nail Infections:
  - Antibiotics: Oral or topical antibiotics may be prescribed to treat bacterial nail infections.

5. Nail Trauma:
  - Rest and protection: Allowing the nail to heal naturally and protecting it from further trauma.
