A skin check is a routine skin examination by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist who will visually inspect the skin for any unusual moles, lesions or skin change which may indicate skin cancer or any other skin problems. Regular skin checks are important for early detection and treatment of skin cancer and for monitoring your overall skin health. Anyone can benefit from a skin check, but if you have a history of skin cancer in your family, you have a history of excessive sun exposure, or you have noticed any changes in your skin, a skin check is highly recommended.
You will be seen by either a consultant dermatologist or plastic surgeon who will take a medical history, including any family history of skin cancer or other skin conditions. The doctor will examine your skin from head to toe. They will carefully look at any moles, freckles and other spots or lesions on your skin. During your examination, photographs will be taken that are kept in your electronic records and may be used for future reference to help with monitoring changes in your skin. If we find anything suspicious, we may recommend a biopsy where a small sample is removed and sent off for testing to check for cancerous cells.
Before you have your skin check, it’s useful if you can make a list of any specific concerns or changes you’ve noticed on your skin. It’s helpful if you can remove any makeup and nail polish and wear comfortable clothing that’s easy to remove so we can access the skin.
Depending on the findings of the skin check, the doctor may provide recommendations for further monitoring, treatment, or follow-up appointments. The outcome of your skin check, including advice and any further action will be sent to you and your GP.
