The second most common type of skin cancer in the UK is squamous cell carcinoma, which is a non-melanoma skin cancer that starts in the top layer of the skin.
The most common cause of squamous cell carcinoma is increased exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) light, either through the sun or other mediums. This can result in the DNA of skin cells in the outer layer of the skin to change, which in some cases allows the skin cells to grow out of control and develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
However, as well as UV light exposure there are other factors that can put you at greater risk of developing the non-melanoma skin cancer. These include:
Firstly, it’s important to get a diagnosis, this will be established by taking a small piece of the abnormal skin, or if needed the whole area. This will be done using a local anesthetic, with the skin being sent to a pathologist to be examined under a microscope. From there you can expect to receive your results within a week to ten days.
Following your diagnosis, the next recommended step in squamous cell carcinoma treatment is usually surgery. Once again this would be done using local anesthetic, removing the cancer with a margin of normal skin around it. The skin is then closed with stitches or in some cases a skin graft or local flap is needed.
